UWCL Wrap: Chelsea, PSG win big to top their groups, Juventus deny Wolfsburg

Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea were the big winners in Tuesday’s UEFA Women’s Champions League group action while Juventus had a late equaliser to celebrate against Wolfsburg.

Last season’s runners-up, Chelsea women take a trip down to Switzerland for a game against Servette.

Melanie Leupolz opened the scoring in the 8th minute before the Kerrby show ended with four goals in 11 minutes – Fran Kirby scored the second goal of the night in the 16th minute, Sam Kerr scored the third and fourth in the 18th and 20th respectively before Kirby added another six minutes later –Jessie Fleming netted the sixth before the break from a tight angle. Guro Reiten finished the demolition as she struck early in the second half. Maren Mjelde came off the bench for Chelsea after nearly eight months out injured.

Jade Boho played 89 minutes of the game before being replaced by Alyssa Grivaz. The Equatorial Guinean forward was unable to savage the day for her Servette FCCF side.

Servette are still without a point or a goal in the group as they suffered a heavy defeat infront of a record 12,782 crowd, the biggest ever for a women’s football match in Switzerland.

Cristiana Girelli brace helped secured a point for Juventus. It took 22 minutes for the home side to final break the deadlock through Girelli who took Juve’s first chance. The visitors had the better of play, an effort that paid off 3 minutes later as Lena Lattwein instantly replied with a long-range screamer. Tabea Wassmuth gave the visitors the lead after the interval in the 65th minute, with her competition-leading fifth goal of the group stage.

In the 89th minute, Wolfsburg, Felicitas Rauch received a second yellow card and Juventus took advantage of their one-player down through Girelli who equalised in added time to delight a 12,789 crowd at Juventus Stadium, venue for May’s final.

Paris Saint-Germain showed superiority in front of 18,344 crowd, when they welcomed debutant Real Madrid to a 4-0 win at the Parc des Princes. Marie-Antoinette Katoto’s neat finish broke the deadlock in the 13th minute before Sara Däbritz doubled the lead before halftime. Katoto then added another nine minutes after the break with a clinical header from Däbritz cross and Rocío Gálvez’s own goal made it four in the 65th.

Both teams were without defeat before this game as Real Madrid will look to bounce back when they welcome PSG on November 18.

Kharkiv vs Breidablik ended in a goalless draw as both teams earned their first points in the section and were unable to conjure up their debut goals of this autumn campaign. Kharkiv came closest to making the breakthrough just before the hour mark when Lyubov Shmatko, from around five metres out, connected with Birgül Sadıkoğlu’s header but was unable to generate the power to beat Telma Ívarsdóttir, who saved low down to her left.
