UWCL Round-up: Debutant Real Madrid through, Wolfsburg ties Juventus as Chelsea make to wait

Debutant, Real Madrid have joined Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals on a night when Juventus denied Chelsea’s hopes of early progress, Wolfsburg kept their ambitions alive but WFC Kharkiv and Breidablik bowed out.

Already qualified players of Didier Ollé-Nicolle won 6-0 in Ukraine as they ended the hopes of Kharkiv, in their 5th group stage match of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

PSG got off the mark through a deft header by Jordyn Huitema in the 15th minute, and added three more goals in the space of 19 minutes, with Sandy Baltimore’s goal in 21st minute, coupled by Ramona Bachmann’s clinical double (37th, 40th). Laurina Fazer scored her first senior goal one minute before the break. Ten minutes later, Amanda Ilestedt scored the sixth with a header, before Estelle Cascarino receives a red card at the end of the game (80th).

European debutants Real Madrid would advance as group runners-up into the quarter-finals, thanks to injury returnee, Kosovare Asllani scoring twice at Breidablik to announce her late group-stage arrival, and Zornoza’s 82nd minute goal.

The orange ball came to use under the Icelandic snow but the Los Blancas defied the nature to get the job done.

It’s an important first away win for the She-Wolfs to keep the quarter-finals chances alive on matchday five in the group match against the already eliminated Swiss champions Servette FCCF.

Inês Pereira’s own goal gave Wolfsburg the advantage before the half-time. Jill Roord finally notched the second six minutes from the end, before Tabea Waßmuth then struck in stoppage time to take her group-stage leading goal tally to six.

With Wolfsburg winning against Servette, they are now level with Juventus in second place on eight points while Chelsea are three points clear, but still have work to do to reach the knockout phase of the Champions League with a trip to Germany to come on matchday six.

There remains the possibility that the three sides could finish level on 11 points – but a Chelsea win or draw at Wolfsburg will send them through to the quarters.

Sam Kerr got a yellow card for knocking to the ground a pitch invader ran onto the field.
