AFCON 2021: Cyriel Dessers replaces Odion Ighalo as Super Eagles striker

Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen has confirmed the replacement of Odion Ighalo with Cyriel Dessers of Feyenoord after his club Al-Shabaab refused to release him.

Dessers coming on board will be the fifth change Eguavoen has made to his final squad list released last month with two out of the previous four being as a result of club issues, while the other two have been due to injuries as Leon Balogun and Shehu Abdullahi were replaced by Tyrone Ebuehi and Semi Ajayi respectively.

The 27-year-old made his unofficial Eagles debut in a 1-1 draw against Tunisia on October 13, 2020 during an international friendly game, but since has not been invited to the national team.

With his 10 goals and one assist in 27 games across all competitions this season for Feyenoord, Dessers is back in the national team after Ighalo’s ejection and Onuachu’s injury.
