The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has raised the prize money for the winners of the 2022 AFCON in Cameroon to $5 million up from the previous amount of $4 million.
At the 2015 edition of the AFCON, the winner received $1.5M as prize money. After seven years, the prize has shot up by 230%.
The Champions of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will receive a five-million-dollar $5M prize fund (about N2.8 billion).
The continental football governing body announced the 10 percent increment in a statement released on Friday evening.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Confederation of African Football’s Executive Committee in Douala, Cameroon on Friday.
The rise in prize money will begin with the 2021 AFCON, which begins on Sunday in Yaounde.
The prize money for the competition’s runners-up will be 2.75 million dollars, up from 2.5 million dollars and a 10% increase.
The prize money for the semi-finalists and quarter-finalists was also increased, for a total increase of 1.85 million dollars on all prize money.
The rise, according to CAF, is in accordance with the organization’s commitment to rewarding excellent performance and elevating the competition’s status, which is now in its 33rd edition.
