Jewel Queens Football Academy, a grassroot women’s football team based in Gombe State has withdrawn from the maiden edition of the Soccer Queens Cup.
The competition which kicked off today at the Confluence Queens Stadium, Lokoja in Kogi State is expected to have six participants, one each from the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.
In an official letter sent to the organizers, Jewel Queens stated financial meltdown as the reason for withdrawing. Even though, the team had earlier stated that they would be more than happy to be part of the competition.
“We have had butterflies in our stomach since the invitation to be part of the maiden Edition of Soccer Queens Cup.”
With this development, five teams will compete at this year’s tournament which ends on 14th of February 2022.
The one week tournament which cut across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria will be an annual tournament aimed at talent discovery and girl child empowerment.
The theme for the inaugural edition is “PLAYING FOR LOVE” which is inspired to using football to advocate for love and unity in Nigeria and Africa at large.
