FIFA WWC: ‘It’s a blessing to have her’ — Onome Ebi on Asisat Oshoala

Nigeria national team captain, Onome Ebi has showered her teammate Asisat Oshoala with praises for her incredible form at the club side ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand which will begin from July 20th – 20th August 2023.

Oshoala returned to the team for the first time since missing the 2022 Women’s Nations Cup (WAFCON) in Morocco due to injury.

The Barcelona star also missed Nigeria’s Revelation Cup campaign in Mexico last February, pulling out of the squad due to injury.

The five-time African Best Player of the Year has, however, been in red-hot form for her club side, though yet to replicate it in the Green and White shirt of Nigeria.

The Nigeria international played a vital role in Barcelona’s league triumph last season, finishing as the division’s joint-top scorer with 19 goals in 20 matches to become the first African to win the prestigious Pichichi award.

Despite how injuries did not help her cause, Oshoala still had a better year individually, scoring four goals in five Champions League games for La Blaugranes.

The 28-year-old continued from where she stopped as she has now recorded 29 goal contributions this season. She has scored 24 goals and registered 5 assists in 30 matches for the club, and she is on course to win the Pichichi once again.

Meanwhile, the nine-time African champions will be banking on the brilliance of Oshoala to make history when they face the Republic of Ireland, Australia, and Canada in Group B.

Nigeria, who have been present at the competition since its inception in 1993, has managed just one quarter-final outing in the tournament which was in 1999.

However, Nigeria defeated World Cup co-host New Zealand 3-0 in a preparatory game, extending their winning streak to three after a seven-match winless streak.

The captain described Oshoala’s availability for the competition as a blessing to the team, saying the FC Barcelona striker is one of the best on the team.

“It’s a blessing to have her in this team. She is a great professional and an example for the whole team.

“Her performance at club level is incredible. Many people forget that few months ago she was injured and today she is up on the pitch putting up huge performances both in the local league and the Champions League.

“She is one of the best players in the World and speaking to her, she is also hugely waiting for the World Cup and has already set her targets for the tournament. She is doing everything she can to be on top form.”

FIFA WWC: Onome Ebi upbeat about Super Falcons chances

The Nigeria women’s senior national team captain, Onome Ebi is upbeat about the chances of Super Falcons at this year’s world cup slated for July in Australia and New Zealand.

Ebi is the longest-serving Nigerian defender and has played in five FIFA World Cup finals (USA 2003, China 2007, Germany 2011, Canada 2015, and France 2019).

The 39-year-old will be making her sixth appearance at football’s top table for women and she is set to become the oldest player in history to feature at this year’s competition when the Falcons take on co-hosts Australia, Canada, and the Republic of Ireland in Melbourne and Brisbane this summer.

With the pool of talents in the Nigeria squad, the defender believes it is time to defy every odd that led to her team’s second-round exit from the tournament in 2019 at the forthcoming global showpiece.

Meanwhile, the former African champions return to winning ways as they concluded their latest international break with a 3-0 win over World Cup co-host New Zealand at the Mardan Stadium in Antalya, Turkey, on Tuesday.

Ebi opened the scoring with a powerful header firing a warning to their counterparts.

Nigeria is one of only seven nations to have participated in every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since its inception in 1991, with its highest achievement being a quarterfinal finish.

Speaking to the CAF media during the countdown show to the tournament, Ebi insisted that Nigeria has what it takes to go all the way and bring home the gong.

“Our ambition is to do our best. We approach this World Cup with the mindset of performing to our utmost best and conquering.

“We had some disappointments at the last  Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) where we did not put in the best performance.

“But now we have the opportunity at the World Cup where we do not want to disappoint again.

“I have faith in my team and I like our current state of mind. The team is united and I believe we will be able to do great things at the World Cup. We are motivated and we want to hoist Nigeria’s flag to the highest point.

“The ball is in our court as players and we have to do everything to be on fire physically and mentally for this opportunity.”

The Jos Cross Country competition, which is being organised by the celebrated Nilayo Sports Management Limited, is a follow up on the efforts the Sports Minister, Mr. Sunday Dare, who last year organised a training camp for selected elite Nigerian runners towards boosting their performances in international marathon races.

Now, he has come up with the first Cross Country competition in Nigeria in 40 years taking a practical bold step in developing long distance running in Nigeria.
