Meet The Winners Of The World Athletics Awards 2021

Female Rising Star: Athing Mu

The US teenager was undefeated at 800m all year, winning Olympic gold at the distance following a long but successful collegiate season. She broke the senior US 800m record with her triumph in Tokyo and then improved it to 1:55.04 just a few weeks later. She also excelled at 400m, clocking a North American U20 record of 49.57 for the distance.

“It means the world to know that my support goes beyond friends and families and extends worldwide,” said Mu. “This award shows all young girls that your dreams can, indeed, come true.”

Male Rising Star: Erriyon Knighton

Throughout 2021 the 17-year-old took down several marks that had belonged to sprint legend Usain Bolt. Knighton first set world U18 bests of 20.11 and 20.04 over 200m, but his rapid rise continued and he broke Bolt’s world U20 record for the distance with 19.88 and 19.84. He went on to finish fourth in the Olympic final with 19.93.

“I’m really thankful for this award,” said Knighton. “One of my most memorable moments of this year was making it to the Olympic final in Tokyo and finishing fourth at the age of 17.”

Woman of the Year Award: Anju Bobby George

The former international long jump star from India is still actively involved in the sport. In 2016 she opened a training academy for young girls, which has already helped to produce a world U20 medallist. A constant voice for gender equality in her role as Senior Vice President of the Indian Athletics Federation, Bobby George also mentors schoolgirls for future leadership positions within the sport.

Other award winners were:

Inspiration Award: Mutaz Barshim and Gianmarco Tamberi

The shared high jump victory between Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim and Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi became one of the biggest talking points of the Olympic Games – not only for everything it represented in their own individual careers, having both battled serious injuries since the last Games, but mainly for the act of respect and sportsmanship between two friends.

Coaching Achievement Award: Bobby Kersee

The US coach has guided the careers of many legendary athletes over the years, but this year two of his charges made history. Allyson Felix became the most decorated female track and field Olympian in history after winning her 10th and 11th Olympic gold medals in Tokyo, while training partner Sydney McLaughlin broke two world records in the 400m hurdles and claimed Olympic gold in the discipline.

Member Federations Award: Federacion Costarricense de Atletismo (Costa Rica)

In recognition for their outstanding training, competition and development programme roll-out over the past 12 months, for their consultative work on the World Athletics Kids’ Athletics programme, and for successfully staging a host of international events over the past year.

Jean-Pierre Durand World Athletics Photograph of the Year

This year’s award is dedicated to the memory of Jean-Pierre Durand, one of the sport’s most prolific photographers and photo chief for a number of World Athletics Series events, who died in October.

The winning image was taken on one of the morning sessions in Tokyo. Ryan Pierse’s photograph of the women’s high jump qualifying at the Tokyo Olympic Games

President’s Award: Peter Diamond, Executive Vice President of NBC Olympic programming

“Athletics owes Peter a massive debt of gratitude,” said World Athletics President Sebastian Coe. “Peter has worked alongside us for effectively 40 years and has been a constant source of great advice and wise counsel, and occasional humour that has softened the edges of any particular situation. And he has made athletics a lot better.”

Karsten Warholm wins World Men’s Athlete of the Year

Karsten Warholm of Norway was named the World Athlete of the Year at the World Athletics Awards 2021.

Warholm uncorked one of the most remarkable performances in athletics history when he stormed to gold in the 400m hurdles at the Tokyo Olympics. Having already broken the world record with 46.70 in Oslo in the lead-up to the Games, Warholm exceeded all expectations in the Japanese capital to claim gold in a stunning world record of 45.94. In a race of incredible depth, the top three athletes finished inside the pre-2021 world record.

“I’m so happy for this,” said Warholm. “First when I saw the time (in Tokyo), I was like, ‘This must be a mistake!’ Because I didn’t see that one coming. And I didn’t see the victory coming before crossing the finish line.

“It was a very intense race, I knew the American and the Brazilian and all the other guys were really chasing me. I always go out hard and I never know what is going on behind me. I was just fighting all the way to the finish line. When I realised 45.94 was the reality, I was thinking: ‘This is not too bad. I’ll take it!’”

Elaine Thompson-Herah named World Athlete of the Year

Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica has been voted the World Women’s Athlete of the Year at the World Athletics Awards 2021, a ceremony held virtually on Wednesday, 1 December.

Thompson-Herah produced one of the finest sprint seasons in history this year, retaining her Olympic 100m and 200m titles in Tokyo and adding a third gold medal in the 4x100m relay. On top of her Olympic triple, she also clocked world-leading times of 10.54 and 21.53 over 100m and 200m respectively, moving to second on the world all-time lists and coming within touching distance of the long-standing world records.

“I just take it year by year,” said Thompson-Herah. “I went very close to the world record so you know, anything is possible. No spikes hanging up any time soon!

“The World Championships in Oregon is most definitely my next big target,” she added. “It is close to home, I hope friends and family can come out and watch. I hope I get some crowd as well. That couldn’t happen in Tokyo but hopefully in Eugene I can get my friends and family to come and cheer me on.”

FIFA releases match schedule for 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

FIFA today released the match schedule for the tournament, set down to run in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 6, 2023.

The tournament will feature games held in nine different cities and 10 separate venues across the two host nations.

Western Australia has missed out on the most sought-after games at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with no knockout matches and no Matildas games to take place in Perth.

Perth Rectangular Stadium will hold just five matches, the equal lowest number of any of the host cities across Australia and New Zealand.

All of those will be in the group stage, with Perth the only one of the five Australian host cities not to host a single game from the knockout phase, effectively ending the city’s hopes of welcoming women’s soccer’s biggest drawcards like current world champion the United States of America or Olympic champion Canada, significantly reducing the tourism potential of the event for West Australia.

All four of the other Australian cities including Adelaide will host matches in the knockout round of 16 phase, with Brisbane and Sydney to host quarter-finals.

The semi-finals will take place in Sydney and Auckland, with the third-place game in Brisbane, and the final at Sydney’s Stadium Australia on Sunday August 20.

Out of a total of 64 games, 35 will be held in Australian venues, while 29 will be held in New Zealand.

“Without them you are losing every final” – Senegal coach slams Klopp for ‘little tournament’ remark

Jurgen Klopp’s statement on the AFCON continues to stir up reactions. This time it is Aliou Cissé who leaves his reserve.

Next January, there will be a small tournament in Africa. We will have to fight on several fronts with the players we have.” By saying this, Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp sparked controversy among Africa journalists and coaches.

“I can’t answer what Jurgen Klopp says because I don’t know in what context he’s saying it. I don’t know why he said it, what the journalist’s question was. Now Klopp is saying out loud what a lot of coaches in Europe are whispering,” said Aliou Cissé.

Senegal have qualified for the next AFCON scheduled to hold from January 9 to February 6, 2022. The Lions of Téranga are housed in group B with Guinea, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

“I manage Senegal and my player plays for Klopp at Liverpool. I respect Liverpool not Klopp who undermines African football events. He is where he is today because of African footballers.

“Without them he was losing every final until Salah, Mane, Matip, Keita came to his rescue to win the first ever major European big final.”

As manager of Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, Klopp has reached a total of eight finals, but he has lost six in a row including the 2018 and 2013 Champions League finals.

Klopp reached the first cup final of his managerial career in 2012, when his Borussia Dortmund side, who had wrapped up the Bundesliga title a few weeks earlier, dismantled a star-studded Bayern Munich 5-2 at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin to lift the German Cup.

“Today he has guts to call AFCON a small tournament. AFCON has the same number of participant (24) like their UEFA Euro. Who does he think he is? AFCON will have the same superstars that are currently helping him to shine at Liverpool. AFCON is in same quality as Euros. I am glad Mane is still humble despite being under an Arrogant man.”

“No one respect Africa Cup, we are the monkeys” – Patrice Evra slams Ballon d’Or organizers, call on CAF to do better

Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has questioned why Eduardo Mendy was overlooked for the 2021 Yashin Trophy despite playing a vital role in Chelsea’s Champions League success with his notable clean sheets record. The 29-year-old Senegalese was instead recognised as the second-best goalkeeper in the world behind Donnarumma.

Evra conveyed this message in a six-minute video recording on his Instagram page where he questioned the authenticity of the Ballon d’Or awards organized by the French Football.

He believes the Africa Cup of Nations is not getting deserved recognition when compared to other continental tournaments.

“Also the goalkeeper… what about Edouard Mendy? You know, but of course, African Cup, we are the monkeys so no one respects this competition,” he said.

Evra also believes things will change if CAF can do better in promoting and marketing Africa football; “But things will change, things will change,” he said.

“We are the only competition where you have to leave your club, leave for three weeks and play that cup because in Africa we always have a little space.”

“It is a disrespect to Africa to host FIFA Club World Cup during AFCON” – Mido slams FIFA

Legendary Egyptian striker Ahmed Hossam Hussein Abdelhamid, publicly known as Mido has slammed world governing body Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

The former Tottenham Hotspur star is unhappy with FIFA’s decision to stage the Club World Cup at the same time as the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

The Club World Cup was scheduled for December 2021, but it will now be held from February 3 to 12, 2022, in the United Arab Emirates after original hosts Japan pulled out because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Club World Cup sees the winners of the continental cups in FIFA’s six confederations, along with the UAE league champions, compete to become the World Club Champions.

While the AFCON tournament will take place from January 9 to February 6 in Cameroon, Mido, who won the 2006 AFCON title with Egypt, feels that FIFA are disrespecting Africa’s biggest football tournament.

“FIFA deciding to hold the Club World Cup while AFCON is going on is a sign of disrespect to African football,” Mido said on twitter.

“It wouldn’t have been the case with the Euros or Copa America.”

The draw for the Club World Cup was conducted on Monday and African champions Al Ahly of Egypt will represent in the global tournament.

They will face Mexican side Monterrey in the first round and the winner will face Copa Libertadores winner Palmeiras in the semi-finals.

Egyptian and Africa Football power house, Al Ahly are set to protest dates for the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup finals as some of Al Ahly’s Egyptian players are expected to be included in the Pharaohs squad for the AFCON.

“Al Ahly SC will send official letters on Tuesday to the Egyptian Football Association, CAF, and FIFA, requesting the three parties to collaborate to resolve the clash of dates between the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup,” a club statement read.

“The FIFA Club World Cup will be held in the UAE between 3 and 12 February which clashes with the dates of the Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held between 9 January and 6 February in Cameroon.

“Al Ahly SC have more than seven players in the Egyptian national team’s squad in addition to three foreign players who will represent their national teams in the competition, which will impact our participation in the FIFA Club World Cup.”

Al Ahly also took part in the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup finals and they clinched bronze during the tournament which was staged in Qatar.

Emmanuel Dennis enjoying life under Claudio Raineri

High flying Nigeria forward, Emmanuel Dennis’ goal was the first Chelsea conceded from open play in an away Premier League match this season.

He is also the first Watford player to score in three Premier League matches in a row (vs Manchester United, Leicester City, Chelsea) since Troy Deeney in February 2017.

Dennis who scored his sixth goal of the season in impressive fashion in the first half against the Blues also reflected positively on his time so far at Watford, looking forward to a bright future at the club.

“I’m really proud of the team because we played really well,” Dennis said.

“The result is unfortunate, they were lucky to take the three points. The intensity was good and we’re slowly understanding the way the manager wants us to play. We can see the progress in how we play so I’m really proud of the team, we just need to keep working hard and the results will come.”

“I knew if I tried to shoot he was going to open his legs and I was lucky to score in the end. I’m happy with the goal but in the end we didn’t get the three points.”

Dennis is the only players after Mohammed Salah to have 5+ goals and 5+ assists in the Premier League this season. Also, only Mo Salah has been involved in more goals (20) than Emmanuel Dennis (11) so far in the Premier League.

He is also only the sixth player in Premier League history to reach both five goals and five assists in 12 or fewer games, after Eric Cantona (11), Jurgen Klinsmann (12), Arjen Robben (11), Andrey Arshavin (10) and Bruno Fernandes (9).

“I’m just doing my job, I’m really happy I’m here and I’m enjoying being part of the team. I’m training well and being positive, and I’m really happy.” he concluded.

With Victor Osimhen out on injury, report has it that, Emmanuel Dennis made the 40 man provisional list submitted by Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr for the upcoming continental tournament, AFCON.
