NWSL: Washington Spirit emerges champions of the 2021 NWSL Championship

Washington Spirit got past Chicago Red Stars 2-1 in overtime at Lynn Family Stadium for its first-ever National Women’s Soccer League Championship on Saturday.

Historic season for Washington Spirit who had went through a tough time early on and put together a solid run, which they went 9-0-3 including the playoffs.

Despite their struggles, the Spirit’s roster included Golden Boot winner Ashley Hatch and Goalkeeper of the Year Aubrey Bledsoe, as well as Rodman, the daughter of former NBA player Dennis Rodman.

The Red Stars were playing in its second straight NWSL Championship, which they had lost to North Carolina 4-0 in 2019 and have also reached the playoffs for a sixth straight year.

Rachel Hill found the opening goal late in the first half. It was near the back post on a header off a cross from Wright in the fifth minute of stoppage time for the Red Stars 1-0 lead that they took into halftime.

Rodman nearly tied the game in the 61st minute with a blast from distance that hit the post.

Rodman, the NWSL Rookie of the Year award was the one who turned the league’s title game on her head. It was well known before Saturday that Rodman is a star of the future, but what played out in the second half and extra time at Lynn Family Stadium felt like a timeline expediting right before everyone’s eyes.

The Spirit tied the match in the 67th minute through Andi Sullivan’s penalty kick that went under the hands of Red Stars’ keeper Cassie Miller. Washington was awarded the penalty kick on Chicago defender Tierna Davidson’s tackle of Tara McKeown –who had received a well crafted cross from Rodman– in the box.

Kelly O’Hara had the eventual game-winning goal that she could’ve never dreamed to have in extra time. She finished off a header along the back post that was delivered off the leg of Trinity Rodman in the 96th minute of extra time for a 2-1 advantage.

Chicago played hard and nearly found a way to tie the match up down to the final couple minutes of the extra time. Makenzy Doniak broke free of a Spirit defender at the top of the box and had a point-blank shot that was saved by Washington keeper Aubrey Bledsoe with a dive to her right in the 115th minute. Then, Arin Wright fired a 30-yard online kick that appeared to hit the crossbar and go over in the 120th minute

Next season, the 10-team league will expand to 12 teams with the addition of Angel City FC in Los Angeles and the San Diego Wave.

Hayet Abidal files for divorce over Hamraoui’s case

Hayet Abidal, the wife of the former French international, announced on Friday that she would file for divorce, saying in a statement that Eric Abidal had adulterous relationship with Kheira Hamraoui, the PSG player assaulted on 4 November.

PSG confirm player Aminata Diallo in police custody over attack on Kheira Hamraoui

The former Algerian gymnast Hayet Kebir married Eric Abidal in 2003 and the couple have five children together.

According to TV3, Jennifer Losada, Hayet’s lawyer, has issued a statement to explain and justify it. Although the text is very brief, it makes it clear that the reason for Hayet Abidal’s decision has to do with the attack on the former Barça player, currently at PSG .

Forced by the circumstances and with distaste for the Hamraoui case, Hayet Abidal will request a divorce in Barcelona,” Jennifer Losada, Hayet Abidal’s lawyer announced this Friday.

According to AFP, the statement said that the former sports director of Barça “confessed to his wife to have an adulterous relationship with Ms. Hamraoui”. The discovery of Kheira Hamraoui’s phone chip, owned by Eric Abidal, forced the former French international to to admit to an extra-marital affair with Hamraoui.

It should be remembered that both Eric Abidal and his wife are being investigated for a possible revenge for an alleged infidelity and that the woman has asked to testify voluntarily as soon as possible to “put an end to the rumor” that links her to the Hamraoui case.

‘So like that, you sleep with married men?’ – Hamraoui’s attackers; Abidal and Wife set to be questioned by French police

While Kheira Hamraoui has requested respect for her private life and has reconstructed the events, the Versailles judicial police continue to take statements from those who may be implicated in the events in order to find clues and, obviously, those responsible.

Eric Abidal’s lawyer, Olivier Martin also stated that his client would not be making any statement at this time.

#WhereIsPengShuai: WTA willing to pull out of China, Beijing winter olympics maybe boycott

As the WTA and ATP Tour seasons draw to a close this week with finals in Mexico and Italy, the tennis spotlight has focused on China with the women’s governing body on Sunday calling on the Chinese government to investigate allegations of sexual assault made by Peng against a former vice premier.

Chinese tennis star vanishes for accusing country’s former vice premier of sexual abuse

Stacey Allaster, the former-CEO of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) who negotiated millions of dollars of rights deals with China, told Reuters on Monday the tennis world has put Peng Shuai’s health and safety ahead of business.

Our sport is focusing on the health and safety of Peng Shuai, business is secondary,” Allaster, the Chief Executive, Professional Tennis for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) told Reuters on Monday.

China has been the focus of the WTA’s most aggressive expansion over the last decade and hosted nine tournaments in the 2019 season with a total $30.4 million of prize money on offer. The season-ending WTA Finals had a prize purse of $14 million in 2019 when it was played in Shenzhen for the first time.

However, WTA Chief Executive Steve Simon told various U.S. media outlets on Thursday the tour would consider pulling tournaments worth tens of millions of dollars out of China.

We’re definitely willing to pull our business and deal with all the complications that come with it,” he told CNN in an interview.

“Because this is certainly bigger than the business. Women need to be respected and not censored.

“We have reached out to her on every phone number and email address and other forms of contact,” he said. “There’s so many digital approaches to contact people these days that we have, and to date we still have not been able to get a response.”

When asked about the purported email received from Peng, Simon questioned its veracity.

“Whether she was coerced into writing it, someone wrote it for her, we don’t know,” said Simon. “But at this point I don’t think there’s any validity in it and we won’t be comfortable until we have a chance to speak with her,” he said.

On the other hand, Hu Xijin, the editor of the Global Times, responded to Simon’s comments on Friday on Twitter, saying “don’t use a coercive tone when expressing any concern to China.

“Perhaps you did it out of goodwill. But you should understand China, including understanding how the system you dislike has promoted the actual rights of the 1.4 billion Chinese,” said Hu, whose newspaper is published by the ruling Communist Party’s official People’s Daily

By Friday, the hashtag #WhereIsPengShuai had racked up over 32m mentions on Facebook’s Instagram, as well as Twitter, which is also blocked in China, according to hashtag analysis website BrandMentions.

In contrast, the topic remains heavily censored in China’s tightly controlled cyberspace

What price, if any, tennis might ultimately pay for demanding an investigation of a former-top government official is uncertain

As China prepares to host the Winter Olympics in Beijing in February, there are calls from global rights groups and others for a boycott over its human rights record. On Thursday, US President Joe Biden confirmed he is mulling a diplomatic boycott of the event, according to CNN.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has declined to comment on Peng’s matter, saying “Experience shows that quiet diplomacy offers the best opportunity to find a solution for questions of such nature. This explains why the IOC will not comment any further at this stage.”

CAFWCL: FAR Rabat edge out Malabo Kings to clinch bronze title

Five minutes after the break, Malabo King’s were able to equalize with Carolina Martins Pereira’s header.

In the 60th minute, Ghizlane Chebbak capitalized on Malabo’s goalkeeper mistake as she converted the second for her team. Chebbak then doubled her goal before the final whistle, to win the Woman of The Match award and ended it 3-1.

“In the first half, we played well. In the second half, we started making individual mistakes, and that’s the reason of the loss

“We performed well in the tournament generally, but we played today with many injured players. We learnt a lot from this tournament and we’ll use it for the future tournaments” Malabo Kings head coach Ruben Garcia said.

Abdallah Haidamou – ASFAR Coach on winning the bronze of the first ever women’s Champions League on the continent:

“It was a good match. We talked with the players and agreed that now we have to at least get a medal to Morocco after we lost the chance for both gold and silver medals,” he said.

“We hope the club’s chief gives the girls the financial prizes they deserve,” he added.

The coach then single out forward and Moroccan women’s international Ghizlane Chebbak while praising his squad.

“Ghizlane Chebbak is great in and outside of the field. She’s the beating heart of the team, and today she got what she deserved”.
