AWCONQ: NFF set to rejig Super Falcons technical team

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is ready to overhaul the senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, following recent poor results.

The federation issued a press statement yesterday congratulating the Super Falcons on reaching the final round of the qualification campaign for the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) billed for Morocco next year.

Following a 2-0 triumph over the Black Queens of Ghana in the first round, the nine-time African champions lost 1-0 in the reverse fixture in Accra, but advanced on a 2-1 aggregate.

As a result, the NFF’s General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, has announced that the Nigerian football governing body has finalized plans to re-energize the technical team while also strengthening the playing body

“I will start by congratulating the team for the victory over the Black Queens of Ghana. Notwithstanding, there are deficiencies that we must deal with squarely and without any ambiguity in order that the team will be ready for the challenges ahead.

“The Super Falcons can, and should, exhibit far greater marksmanship. That is why we have to make the move to reinvigorate the team ahead of the final round of qualifiers against Cote d’Ivoire. The rejuvenation is with an objective for better focus, commitment and productivity.”

The Super Falcons have played a total of 10 games this year and have won just six of them with losses coming in the Aisha Buhari Cup final against South Africa, USA and Jamaica in a freindly and recently against Ghana in the AWCON qualifier.

Scottish Premiership champions Rangers will look to delay the release of Nigerian trio Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

According to the Sunday Mail, Rangers want to make an agreement with Nigeria football chiefs to ensure Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo, and Calvin Bassey play against Celtic in January.

Balogun, Aribo and Bassey are expected to be called up by the three-time African Champions for the competition which kicks off on January 9, 2022.

FIFA rules state that players should be released from their clubs on December 27 which would potentially rule out the trio from the Old Firm derby against Celtic on January 2.

Balogun and Aribo have been vital for the Scottish title holders and also for the national team. Bassey was called up for the first time earlier this month and is yet to play but he is also an important piece for his club.

Manager Steven Gerrard and sporting director Ross Wilson have an excellent working relationship with Rohr and the Nigerian FA which could help their demand.

Reinstatement of Salisu Yusuf back into the national team: A typical example of rewarding corruption in Nigeria

A group, PLAY!YA Nigeria Youth Development Initiative has expressed disappointment over the reinstatement of the former Assistant Super Eagles coach, Mr Salisu Yusuf, who was allegedly indicted in 2018 by the Ethics Committee of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for collection of bribes and manipulation of members of the national team.

In a statement released on October 24, signed by the Executive Director of the group, Eze Allosyius called for the immediate reversal of the reinstatement so as not to set a dangerous precedent.

The statement also asked the NFF to transfer the case file of its Ethics Committee to Nigerian anti-graft agencies like the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for prosecution in a regular court of law.

The statement reads: PLAY!YA Nigeria Youth Development Initiative receives with utmost disappointment the news of the reinstatement of the former Assistant Super Eagles coach, Mr Salisu Yusuf, who in 2018 was found guilty by the Ethics Committee of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) of the collection of bribes and manipulation of members of the national team through an induced selection.

PLAYYA Nigeria calls for the immediate reversal of the reinstatement, which otherwise shall work as precedence for others like Mr Yusuf who continue to engage in such foul deeds.

The NFF should right now send the case file of its Ethics Committee to the Nigerian anti-graft agencies like the Independent Corrupt Practice Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further prosecution in a regular court of law. Development of sports in Nigeria will only be possible if we begin to fight corruption in sports without any fear or favour.

Mr Yusuf was the head coach of the Super Eagles Team B and assistant to the national team coach, Mr Gernot Rohr. He was caught on camera by Ghanaian investigative journalists posing as agents to several players. During the sting operation, which was widely publicised in national and international media, Mr Yusuf was seen collecting cash in US dollars from the supposed agents who had asked him to field certain players in the upcoming African Nations Cup Championship. He was further promised 15 percent of the players’ contract after their selection into the team. As against the figure quoted by the investigators who caught Mr Yusuf, he eventually agreed to receive 750 US dollars as a “gift of trivial and symbolic value”, while the NFF Ethics Committee found him guilty of collecting the sum of 1000 US dollars in bribes and banned him from any football activities for one year with payment of a fine of 5000 US dollars.

In a recent broadcast, the NFF spokesperson, Mr Ademola Olajire, attributed the reinstatement of Mr Yusuf to a recommendation made by the NFF Technical Committee and the Board’s approval. He went further to eulogize him as “highly respected for his match–reading ability, calm demeanour and proficiency in talent discovery and development”. The above statement as widely reported in the news and credited to the Secretary General and the spokesperson of the Nigeria Football Federation is, at best, an insult to the collective reasoning of all Nigerians. Bribery and corruption are dreadful and well-known ailments in Nigerian sports that continuously eliminate any balanced and fair competition out of personal greed.

Nigeria as a nation is waging war against bribery and corruption in the general political space. This level of encouragement of corruption by rewarding the same person that was found guilty by its own Ethics Committee with reinstatement in the same NFF is like telling Mr Yusuf and others to continue with their stock-in-trade. In order words, the reinstatement is a green light for would-to-be bribe collecting coaches to go ahead with the nefarious activities.

Equally worrisome is the fallacy contained in the positive statement describing Mr Yusuf. How on earth can a man who takes a bribe to field players in his team be adjudged as exercising a calm demeanour and being good in discovering new talents? The only semblance of calm in the demeanour of Mr Yusuf was seen in the video by unapologetically accepting money.

Sports underdevelopment in Nigeria is majorly attributed to bribery and corruption which has killed the soil that germinates the plants of sports development over the years. The NFF led by Mr Amaju Pinnick has been enfolded with too many controversies bordering on corruption and shoddy deals like the Nike contracts related to the hiring of Mr Rohr or the inflated welfare and allowances of the national team members. It is therefore no surprise that the public will view Mr Yusuf’s reinstatement as a sign of the NFF being comfortable working with confessed and convicted criminals (according to the very own NFF Ethics Committee).

PLAY!YA Nigeria is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with offices in Lagos, Nigeria. We are concerned with sports as a social phenomenon and their social implications. We are not interested, though, in measuring the achievement of sports in terms of the numbers of spectators attracted by them, or any new records established, but rather in the social virtues they foster. Our initial question therefore is: how can sports best support individual as well as collective human development, cultural diversity, and social sharing?

Since 2008 PLAY!YA Nigeria has been working to expertly explore and make use of the so far scarcely promoted social potential of sports. We try to get human individuals and organizations to talk to eachother, to collectively gather ideas and develop methods and concepts, to organize and structure events and projects.
