CAFCL: Al-Hilal sends Rivers United to the Confederation playoffs round

Rivers United have been eliminated from the CAF Champions League after going down to a 1-0 defeat against Sudanese club Al Hilal at the Suez Canal Stadium on Sunday evening. The Nigeria based side, rued the goal conceded at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium last weekend as they bowed out after a 2-1 aggregate loss to Al Hilal of Sudan.

The Pride of Rivers failed to keep a clean sheet when the Sudanese visited and were effectively kept at bay when they visited the Blue Jewel stadium on Sunday.

Yasser Mazmel scored the only goal in the fourth minute, after the visitor’s defence was caught off guard, with the striker slotting beyond the Nigerian goalkeeper.

The Port Harcourt club isn’t out of continental action as the team gets the consolatory prize of participating in the CAF Confederations Cup play-offs. They now join Enyimba in the playoff round, with the winners of the double-legged match reaching the group stage of the competition.

Rivers United crashed out in the first round of the CAF Champions League last season, and failed to reach the group stage of the Confederation after being paired with Enyimba.

CAFCC: Finidi George wins big in first home game

Enyimba booked a place in the play-off round of the 2021/2022 CAF Confederation Cup after a 4-0 aggregate victory over Dimbars FC of Senegal on Sunday.

The Peoples Elephant capitalized on the 1-0 advantage they got in the first leg of the encounter played at the Stade Fode Wode on October 16.

The second leg played at the Enyimba International Stadium had barely kicked off before Tosin Omoyele put the home side ahead with a quick goal in the 2nd minute before Victor Mboama doubled the lead before halftime.

Samuel Kalu fritzed the icing on the cake in the 90th minute with a well-taken goal to send the eight-time Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions into the final round of the qualifiers.

Enyimba β€” the only Nigerian side left in the competition β€” will know their playoffs opponents on Tuesday when the draw takes place in Cairo, Egypt.

In the other game of the day, Bayelsa United were dumped out on Saturday after they lost 4-0 to Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien, and bowed out 4-1 on aggregate.

The Bayelsa boys shocked the Tunisians with a 1-0 victory in the first leg of the tie at the Samson Siasia last weekend.

However, they were out of depth in Tunis and lost the return leg 4-0.

The Juventus of the Arabs took the lead in the 11th minute as Chris Kouakou capitalised on horrendous defending to fire past goalkeeper John Shaibu, before Mohamed Ben Ali doubled the advantage six minutes later.

Aymen Harzi then made it three for Giovanni Solinas’s men in the 27th minute before Fares Chawat completed the rout five minutes before the half-time break.

AWCON Qualifier: Super Falcons suffers defeat, qualify for next round ahead of Ghana

African champions Nigeria are through to the second round of the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations despite a disappointing 1-0 defeat to west African rivals Ghana in Accra on Sunday.

The Super Falcons fought a tough battle to edge out Ghana’s Black Queens and reach the final round of the qualification series for next year’s Women Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Morocco. A lone goal defeat in Accra on Sunday evening meant the nine-time African champions survived with a 2-1 aggregate win over their hosts.

Princella Adubea in the 47th minute scored the lone goal of the game for Ghana as the Super Falcons were expecting adherence to fair play principle.

Afterwards, captain Asisat Oshoala missed an opportunity to draw Nigeria level. With the strong scent of blood, the Black Queens launched onslaught after onslaught but could not get the goal that would have tied the fixture and make penalty shootout inevitable at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Both teams finished with 10 players after Ghana’s Portia Boakye in the 64th minute was the first to receive her marching order before UmeΓ₯ IK FF defender, Glory Ogbonna followed suit in the 69th minute by being red-carded for the Nigerian side.

Nigeria has qualified for the final stage of qualification for the 2022 AWCON and will face Ivory Coast in a bid to qualify for the tournament to be hosted by Morocco.
