FAWSL: Arsenal, Chelsea leading the tittle race after gameweek five

Arsenal and Chelsea leading the tittle race on the Women’s Super League table after a Tottenham loss joined a Manchester derby draw in the fifth week of action.

Arsenal has a three-point lead on Chelsea and Spurs as Katie McCabe, Lotte Wubben-Moy, and Frida Maanum scored in a decisive win.

Sandy MacIver had been relatively untroubled in the Everton goal before Katie McCabe’s half-volley stunner looped over her for the opener just after the half-hour, before she was nutmegged by Carlotte Wubben-Moy from a corner (41) as Arsenal built up a comfortable lead before the break.

The hosts looked more dangerous after half-time and had various chances to add to their lead before Frida Maanum powered past MacIver from 20 yards four minutes from time to earn a fifth win from five games, as the Gunners restored their three-point lead at the top of the WSL.

The defending champions only allowed four shots and not a single shot on target but needed 83 minutes to make the breakthrough at the Cherry Red Records Stadium when substitute Harder fired home after a short corner. Kirby wrapped up the win in the 94th minute with her 50th career goal in the FAWSL as Emma Hayes’ side went second in the table on goal difference, while the visitors stay bottom as they still look for their first points of the season.

Arsenal, other FAWSL players link arms to unite with NWSL players over sexual allegations

Arsenal, Everton and the match officials show solidarity with NWSL players by taking a united stand against sexual abuse in the sports.

Several WSL teams circled up and joined arms like their American peers did following allegations of severe misconduct from several authority figures including coaches Paul Riley and Richie Burke as well as resigned commissioner Lisa Baird.

While Chelsea’s squad and coaching team joined arms before kick-off on Sunday, Leicester opted to applaud the gesture.

Players from opposing teams at four other games also joined each other in the centre circle before kick-off.

Arsenal’s Jonas Eidevall on NWSL: “It’s instrumental that players feel listened to, so bad things don’t happen. Hopefully that is an eye-opener, not just in the US, but across a lot of different associations & leagues because I would assume that this incident isn’t unique.”

“We know that the FA are planning something on a bigger stage and we just thought it’d be more appropriate to show more solidarity on the biggest stage where it’s more powerful,” said Foxes boss Jonathan Morgan.

WCQ: Intentional Super Eagles edge closer to Qatar 2022

Super Eagles avenge defeat in Lagos to regain control of group.

Three times African Champions, Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated Les Fauves of Central Africa Republic (CAR) 0-2 to avenge last week’s home loss in the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Gernot Rohr, changed his tactics and opted for a more attacking starting XI and reverted to a three-man defence, introducing Chidozie Awaziem for Ola Aina with the team’s captain, Ahmed Musa, making his 100th appearance for the West Africans nation after making the XI ahead of Chidera Ejuke. Maduka Okoye was in post for Eagles replacing Uzoho.

The visitors with a very intentional spirit started the encounter on a bright note with more possession and as early as in the ninth minute, Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho combined but the Napoli striker could not find the target with his effort.

The duo kept piling the pressure on their host while Musa and Moses Simon continued with their runs to split the opposition defence.

Leon Balogun opened the scoring in the 29th minute after a long throw was half-cleared by the CAR defenders before a cross was launched from deep by Awaziem for Leon Balogun to volley home a side-footed finish.

The CAR goalkeeper flapped at a Super Eagles free-kick before the ball was recycled and William Troost-Ekong squared the ball across the box for Osimhen to finish from close range just before the halftime. It was the 22-year-old’s 8th goal in only 16 national team appearances.

In the second half, Victor Osimhen got past the CAR goalkeeper with a chance to make it 3-0 for Nigeria, but his shot was cleared off the line by a Central African Republic defender.

The Super Eagles have remained unbeaten away from home in competitive fixtures since 2019, and remain on top of their group with nine points from four matches.

They will end their group stage campaign facing Liberia next on November 11 and Cape Verde Islands, three days later.

Frank Sanchez floored Efe Ajagba in a commanding points win

In a battle of undefeated rivals, Nigerian Heavyweight Boxer, Efe Ajagba lost his first professional bout, losing by unanimous decision to Cuban Frank Sanchez on Sunday morning at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The 27-year-old Nigerian Olympian missed a shot at first title, as he could not land a clean right hand punch which he is known for while Sanchez ran riot with steady stiff jabs.

The Cuban Flash threw a right hand that grazed Ajagba, who slipped to the mat late in the round. While he had his knee down, Sanchez caught him with a left, however, referee Mike Ortega called time to allow Ajagba time to recover but did not dock a point from Sanchez for the accidental foul.

Ajagba lost by unanimous decision of 98-91, 98-91 and 97-92 in an undercard bout with Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder in the main event that was tagged the ‘Battle of the Undefeateds’.

In the end, Frank Sanchez remains undefeated with 20 professional wins, 13 coming by Knock Out as he retained his WBC intercontinental Americans and WBO NABO Heavyweight title.

Fury Fist: Deontay Wilder bows to Tyson Fury again.

Tyson Fury recovers from two knockdowns in the fourth round to complete a stunning knockout victory over Deontay Wilder as the British star retained his WBC heavyweight title and preserved his unbeaten (31-0-1) record in Las Vegas on Saturday.

The match was more competitive than many expected but still ended as most predicted, with the Gypsy King outboxing the American to remain the undefeated lineal champion.

After losing the WBC belt to Fury 20 months ago in a one-sided bout, Wilder was the aggressor early, using his jab to back up the larger Fury while seizing on every opportunity to throw his powerful right hand.

Fury weathered the early storm and knocked Wilder down in the third round with a short uppercut but the American responded in the fourth, knocking Fury down twice with shots to the head from close range.

In a tense opening round, Wilder tried to enforce his aggressive tactics as he forced Fury onto the back foot with stinging body shots and clubbing right hands.

But Fury began to find the range with his hurtful straight right hand in the second, then unloaded it perfectly in the third to daze Wilder, who was cuffed to the canvas.

A punishing battle was taking its toll on Wilder as Fury’s right hand sent him crumpling to the canvas in the 10th round, and still he threw back, but Fury finally concluded their saga in the 11th as a huge right hand sent Wilder crashing spectacularly to the canvas.

Tyson Fury landed 150 body punches on Deontay Wilder, with 114 of them being power punches. The other 36 were jabs.

“It was a great fight tonight, it was worthy of any trilogy in the history of the sport,” Fury said on Saturday.

“Deontay Wilder’s a top fighter, he gave me a real run for my money. I always said I’m the best in the world and he’s second best.”

“I went over to shake his hand and say well done and he was like ‘No, I don’t respect you’.”

What next for Fury?

“Before I think about fighting other men, I’m going to bask in this victory because this tonight was one of my greatest wins,” he said on his next fight.
