CONCACAF ban Suriname Vice-President from professional football.

Recalled how 60 year-old Ronnie Brunswijk, the Vice President of Suriname, picked himself to play for the club he owns, captaining the team on Tuesday.

He played 54 minutes for Inter Moengatapoe in a CONCACAF Champions League match against Honduran side Olimpia. He started in attack alongside his son Damian Brunswijk, who played for 29 minutes before being replaced.

Also, the stadium the match was held bears his name.

A New York Times profile described him as “an elite paratrooper, a soccer player, a wanted bank robber, a guerrilla leader, a gold baron and a father to at least 50 children during his lifetime.”

Brunswijk is also known for being a generous man, handing out money to the poor, and he continued that reputation in the changing room after the game.

However, CONCACAF has perceived his act of ‘generosity’ as a punishable offense as he has been disqualified from participating in any related activities for three years after a viral video showed him allegedly passing out money to players of an opposition team.

In a statement released on Saturday, CONCACAF stated: “Having assessed the actions evidenced in the video and considered written statements provided by both clubs, the Committee has determined that serious breaches of integrity rules occurred after the match.

“As a consequence of these rule breaches, both clubs have been disqualified and removed from this year’s CONCACAF League with immediate effect. Additionally, the Committee has ruled that Mr Ronnie Brunswijk is banned for three years from participating in any capacity in CONCACAF competitions.”

CAF Women’s Champions League Draw: Perpetua Nkwocha to grace occasion.

Four-time CAF Women’s Player of the Year Award winner, Perpetua Nkwocha will attend the draw ceremony of the inaugural TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League set to hold on Wednesday, September 29, 2021.

This was confirmed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on its website on Tuesday.

Other players expected to grace the draw event are Merihan Yehia and Alia Zenouki from the Egyptian club Wadi Degla FC.

The draw will be conducted by the CAF Director of Competitions Samson Adamu.

The much anticipated Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament kicked off yesterday in Edo State. The match day one saw five games played and thirteen goals scored.

In a Group A tie, Heartland Queens started off brilliantly with a win after they pipped Rolly Angels 1-0. Chioma John with the lone goal that separated both sides.

Edo Queens held on to a 2-1 win despite attempted late fightback from Naija Ratels.

Glory Osagie broke.the deadlock in the 37th minute for Edo Queens before Habibat Agbaji doubled the advantage in the second half to make it look like an easy demolition but Naija Ratels pulled a goal back through Favour Peter late in the game.

Naija Ratels put up a spirited fight to conjure up an equaliser but they were unable to as they had to settle for a 2-1 defeat in a match that was played in the.presence of dignitaries at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium where the opening ceremony was held.

Rivers Angels dazed Fortress Ladies 4-0 to opened group B. FC Robo Queens of Lagos among early birds to arrive Edo State for the Betsy Obaseki women’s football tournament. Others include Fortress Ladies of Benin and Edo Queens as clubs embark on the compulsory Covid-19 test for all 12 participating clubs.

The tournament which starts tomorrow, Monday September 27, held its official draws tonight at the Edo State Government house. Present at the draws event are host, Her Excellency Betsy Obaseki – Edo State First lady, Deputy Governor of Edo State – Rt.Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu, Hon. Minister for Youth and Sports – Mr.Sunday Dare among other dignitaries.
